UPDATE: New website at http://www.flamingcharli.com.au
We are very excited to announce the arrival of our children’s picture book – Flaming Charli.
Flaming Charli is published by envirobook and is the culmination of a two-year collaboration between myself and illustrator, Lorraine Robertson.
With pleasant rhyming text, and vivid 3D illustrations, Flaming Charli captures the drama of the Australian bush and is sure to win children’s hearts.
The story revolves around Charli, an energetic, Sulphur-crested cockatoo who likes to perform a special trick – the curly wurly Raaaaarrrrrrkkkkk. One morning, while performing her stunt, she sees a bushfire and warns the other forest animals. Charli saves the day!
Lorraine Robertson is the illustrator for Flaming Charli. She has a Ph.D. in Natural History from the University of Newcastle and most recently illustrated the D’harawal series of Seasons and Climate Cycles, Climate and Natural Resources and Dreaming Stories. Apart from painting and natural history illustration, she has extensive experience making prints and as a paper maker.
To illustrate Flaming Charli, Lorraine made paper by hand from recycled materials. She tore the paper into the shape of each pictorial element. Watercolour paint was used to tint the paper and reflect the vivid colours of the native flora and fauna of the Australian bush. The technique Lorraine used gives her illustrations the texture of a collage and a 3D appearance.
The call echoed around the treetops.
All the creatures heard.
Amazed how such a big, loud noise
Came from such a little bird.
